MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) – On 20 June, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Soviet war memorial in Mannswörth, Schwechat, Lower Austria, the Belarusian Embassy in Austria told BelTA.
The event marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the unveiling of memorial plaques bearing newly identified names of Red Army soldiers buried at the site.
Attending the ceremony were heads of diplomatic missions of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and the Russian Federation. It was part of a joint commemoration program organized by the diplomatic missions of the CIS and CSTO member states to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory.
The embassy emphasized that the unveiling of updated memorial plaques bearing the names of soldiers is an important step to preserve historical memory and honor the heroism of Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the fight to liberate Europe.
The Soviet war memorial in Mannswörth, Schwechat was established in June 1962 as a result of local municipalities’ initiative to relocate the remains of Soviet soldiers. At the time of the memorial’s creation, only 98 of the 249 buried individuals had been identified by name. Thanks to archival research conducted in 2022 with the support of the Russian Embassy and Austrian public organizations, the names of an additional 112 buried soldiers were successfully identified.
