Belarus’ parliament wants to build closer contacts with PARLATINO

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Khomenko arrived in Panama to participate in the 38th General Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) in Panama City, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian upper house of parliament.

The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament is expanding its reach. Today it has parliamentarians from 23 countries among its members. Belarus has a status of a permanent observer in this organization. The National Assembly of Belarus is determined to build consistent and sustainable cooperation with PARLATINO. Such parliamentary diplomacy can benefit both countries, facilitate trade with this region. PARLATINO promotes democratic trends in the region, helps ensure sustainable development of Latin American countries, promote regional integration, and strengthen peace and security in the region.

“Our parliamentarians have many things in common, but at the heart of all their activities is love for their homeland, sovereignty, historical traditions. The talks that will take place here will help us exchange best practices in socio-economic matters, and consequently  expand contacts between the peoples of Belarus and Latin America,” noted Sergei Khomenko.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Sergei Khomenko met with First Vice-President of the National Assembly of Nicaragua Arling Patricia Alonso Gómez. Sergei Khomenko noted that Belarus views Nicaragua as one of key political and economic partners in Central America.

A parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Nicaragua visited the Republic of Belarus in October 2023. This visit demonstrated serious intentions of the parties to dramatically upgrade inter-parliamentary relations. In this regard, Sergei Khomenko proposed to intensify inter-parliamentary interaction and establish working contacts in order to facilitate all bilateral processes between the two countries. Arling Patricia Alonso Gómez upheld the proposal of her Belarusian counterpart. She assured that Nicaragua is interested in scaling up inter-parliamentary cooperation with a view to promoting peace and prosperity.
