Belarus' parliament makes statement timed to anniversary of Victory in Great Patriotic War

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – A moral duty of today's and future generations is to preserve the truth about the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and never to forget those who sacrificed their lives for it, reads the statement of the National Assembly released on the occasion of the forthcoming 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. The statement was passed by the House of Representatives on 16 April, BelTA has learned.

The statement was read out by Lilia Ananich, Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives.

The contribution of the Belarusian people to the Great Victory has been immortalized. “Belarusians fought shoulder to shoulder with other nations of the Soviet Union on the front lines of the Great Patriotic War,” the statement reads. It points out that the Belarusian partisan movement became a unique example of truly popular resistance, courage and dedication.

The keynote of the address is that the Great Victory is sacred, it should not fall into oblivion or be revised. It should remain in collective memory of today's and future generations of Belarusians and other peoples as an important moral guideline.

“The statement is our response to attempts to re-write history, infuse alternative assessments of the Great Victory into the mass media landscape. We have inherited this Victory and we are linked to it through our fathers and grandfathers,” Lilia Ananich emphasized.

“Today it is our turn to perpetuate the memory about it and to make sure that the future generation of Belarusians will revere the Great Victory and appreciate the happiness and the right to live under the peaceful sky,” she added.
