MINSK, 24 June (BelTA) – Amid deepening crises and growing confrontation, it is necessary to make every effort to preserve the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that was born in San Francisco, Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yevgeny Shestakov said at an event in Minsk to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, BelTA has learned.
“Belarus is rightfully proud of being one of the UN founding members and one of the first to sign the UN Charter. This act recognized the significant contribution of the Belarusian people to the Victory in World War II and symbolized their aspiration for peace and security,” the deputy foreign minister emphasized.
Yevgeny Shestakov drew attention to the fact that this meeting is taking place in the Loshitsa Estate in Minsk, a place where cooperation between the UN and Belarus was born.
“It was this building-turned-museum that housed the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) Office in the mid-1940s. In the 21st century, the Loshitsa Estate hosted events dedicated to significant UN dates that were attended by the Belarusian president,” the deputy foreign minister noted.
He greeted veterans of the Belarusian diplomatic service, many of whom worked in Belarusian missions to the United Nations and other international organizations.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, veteran diplomats from Belarus, foreign diplomats, and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Belarus Rasul Baghirov.
