MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) – Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko met with Chairman of the Islamic Consultative Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Iran on 31 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

The parties emphasized that this was their second meeting over the past month and such intensity of contacts facilitates regular reconciliation of positions in a dynamically changing environment. The previous meeting between Igor Sergeyenko and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf took place on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg on 11 July 2024.

The parties praised similar approaches of Belarus and Iran to the issue of building a new architecture of international relations, the need to maximize the potential of all international structures, including the BRICS and the SCO, where the member states fully realize the inalienable right of peoples to choose an independent path of development, to dialogue on the principles of mutual respect, to peace and security. The parties discussed the prospects of inter-parliamentary cooperation in a number of priority areas for the two countries. They also reaffirmed their readiness to continue constructive work on the development of trade and economic cooperation as well as the bilateral legal framework.

Igor Sergeyenko also visited the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Tehran, where he met with APA Secretary General Mohammad Reza Majidi.

It was emphasized at the meeting that Belarus pays special attention to cooperation with Asian countries and is ready to expand political and inter-parliamentary contacts. Of course, they should be supported by a concrete agenda, especially since we have common economic interests, Igor Sergeyenko said.

The parties discussed promising areas of Belarus' interaction with the APA, which could become a driving force behind the development of the relations.

The Asian Parliamentary Assembly was established in 2006 at the seventh session of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (APAP) held in Tehran. Currently, the APA is composed of the parliaments of 44 states on a permanent basis. The APA focuses on coordinating the efforts of national parliaments in addressing pressing issues of the day, including by enhancing their role in ensuring peace in the Asian region.
