Belarus intent on expanding multi-faceted cooperation with SCO countries

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin is taking part in a regular conference of the defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, the press service of the Belarusian Defense Ministry told BelTA.

Viktor Khrenin said: “First of all, I would like to express gratitude to Uzbekistan as the country presiding over the organization this year for the invitation to participate in the regular conference of the defense ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states. For us participation in such a representative conference has become another significant event, which foundation was established by the People's Republic of China in 2018 and continued by Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.”

The official remarked that Belarus is intent on further expansion of multifaceted cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states and this is why the country had applied for full membership in this organization. Viktor Khrenin did not rule out the possibility that Belarus would participate in the next conference of the defense ministers in the new capacity.

Viktor Khrenin went on saying: “Unfortunately, today's conference is taking place amid a drastic complication of the military and political situation in many countries across the globe. Slightly more than a year ago while speaking during the conference of defense ministers in Dushanbe I said that the world politics was becoming more and more unpredictable and chaotic while the system of international relations was substantially transformed. It is even more noticeable today. The world is changing rapidly. Foundations of the existing world order are being revised while one totally fails to see contours of the new one.”

Viktor Khrenin stressed that the eagerness of individual countries to pursue unilateral approaches to international relations is having a negative effect on the international situation. The main goal of these approaches is to maintain the existing status quo in a unipolar world paradigm. “In pursuit of the goals that have been set they disregard human lives and interests of others. The bets are so high that they put up with a global recession, disorganization of the world economy as well as problems with energy and food. Moreover, all the steps being taken by the collective West under the USA's leadership considerably increase the risk of new military clashes in various parts of our planet,” he said.

According to the Belarusian defense minister, such actions represent a genuine threat and require serious measures to ensure national security. “We understand that Belarus is in the epicenter of the confrontation. And we've made our choice in favor of comprehensive support for our strategic ally, Russia, which is carrying out a special military operation in Ukraine, which has become an outpost for an enforced and extremely aggressive policy and has become a bargaining chip in hands of its Euro-Atlantic curators. Meanwhile, Belarus does not abandon its usual policy of resolving any conflicts by peaceful means, of restoring ‘bridges of trust' and rebuilding destroyed ties. Our country is in favor of enabling conditions, under which the existing problems concerning major issues on the international agenda and the regional one will be resolved through a collective approach that does not tolerate confrontational thinking, domination, or some exclusiveness,” Viktor Khrenin said.

In conclusion Viktor Khrenin stressed that Belarus is ready to by all means facilitate the advancement of tighter interaction between the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and organizations like the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States. He expressed support for initiatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states aimed at expanding multilateral cooperation in the area of defense and security for the purpose of building a fairer and more balanced world order.
