Belarus government contacts with White House, U.S. Department of State in spotlight

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) – The Belarusian side is communicating with representatives of the White House and the U.S. Department of State. Among other things the parties are discussing matters concerning the release of prisoners. Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov made the statement as he commented on the phone conversation that took place between Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko and President of the United States of America Donald Trump on 15 August, BelTA has learned.

After talking to the Belarus president the U.S. president made a post on the social network Truth Social. Among other things Donald Trump wrote that “we are also discussing the release of 1,300 additional prisoners”. Valentin Rybakov was asked to explain the manner of the conversation about the matter.

“First of all, President Trump thanked Aleksandr Grigoryevich [Lukashenko] for the decision to release 16 people. When he continued the line of thought, our president stopped him and said: ‘Donald, we continue this work, we are working hard on it’,” Valentin Rybakov shared some details of the conversation of the two leaders on the air of the Belarusian TV channel First News.
In his words, the Belarusian side is in touch with representatives of the White House and the U.S. Department of State, consultations with whom are in progress. Including consultations about the release of prisoners. “It is a matter of a two-way movement, so to say. Certain decisions need to be made by each of the two sides in order to successfully resolve these issues,” Valentin Rybakov stated.

The leaders of Belarus and the USA had a phone call on 15 August. The presidents discussed matters on the bilateral agenda, regional affairs, and the situation in hot spots, including Ukraine.

An agreement was reached to continue contacts. Aleksandr Lukashenko invited Donald Trump and his family to visit Minsk. The invitation was accepted.
