Belarus’ FM urges to preserve UN as pillar of multilateral relations

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov held a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Rasul Baghirov and heads of UN agencies accredited in Belarus (UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, UNHCR, IOM) on 28 February, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

The parties highlighted the long-standing fruitful cooperation between Belarus and the United Nations, exchanged views on the priorities of the UN agencies' program activities in Belarus and mapped out plans for the future, including the preparation of the Cooperation Frameworks between Belarus and the UN until 2030 and events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the organization marked this year.

The parties discussed in detail the entire range of cooperation matters with UN agencies and the implementation of relevant international technical assistance projects in the country.
Maksim Ryzhenkov emphasized that Belarus, being one of the founding countries of the UN, cannot stay away from celebrating the UN's 80th anniversary. Such a "venerable" milestone places a great responsibility on the UN member states: they need to preserve the organization as a key component of multilateral relations. Amid the increased conflict potential and growing global polarization, the spirit of the organization should be revived, he stated.

The minister noted that Belarus will celebrate the UN's 80th anniversary along with the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The contribution of the Belarusian people to Victory over fascism and the country’s role in shaping the architecture of the post-war world order are inseparable.
Following the meeting, Maksim Ryzhenkov and Rasul Baghirov signed a joint plan of activities to celebrate the UN's 80th anniversary in Belarus.

The plan was developed by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the UN Country Team and envisages the events across the country throughout the anniversary year coinciding with significant international days.
