Belarus' FM: UN Security Council should represent interests of the entire planet

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) - The composition of the UN Security Council should represent the range of interests of the entire planet, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told an online press conference on 25 September, BelTA has learned.

“Many countries are now seeking to become candidates for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The discussion is not over; it is in progress. Our position is that the composition of the Security Council, especially the permanent members, should be balanced and represent a truly global spectrum of interests. This also applies to regional representation and the policies pursued by the states,” said Vladimir Makei.

The minister quoted former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The U.S. politician, assessing the activities of current European leaders, said that they have lost the “sense of direction and mission” that previous leaders possessed.

“What matters is what the countries led by these or those leaders bring to the work of the UN. So far we have not seen much positive contribution to security,” the diplomat said.
