Belarus' FM comments on visits of Western ‘hawks' to CSTO countries

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) - Visits of the so-called Western “hawks” to the CSTO countries do not contribute to solving conflicts, but on the contrary, exacerbate them, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told an online press conference, BelTA has learned.

One of the questions to the minister was about the visit of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Armenia, during which she openly advised the country to refuse membership in the CSTO, which, in turn, spurred the growth of anti-CSTO sentiment in the region.

“I think that the visit of such ‘hawks' dressed up in a peacekeeper's uniform does not bring anything good. It is enough to remember her visit to Taiwan, which resulted in a sharp deterioration of the situation in the region. “As for the CSTO, I am deeply convinced that we should not rely on any peacekeepers from the outside. Those people who came, particularly to Yerevan, have absolutely no interest in our organization to exist effectively. Moreover, they represent a whole camp of countries that previously were interested in having permanent hotbeds of tension on the perimeter of the Soviet Union and now on the perimeter of Russia, which they see as the main opponent, almost as the spawn of evil. Therefore, these kinds of visits will not be associated with pacification of various conflicts, but on the contrary, with their aggravation. Relying on external 'uncles and aunts' is hardly advisable,” said Vladimir Makei.
