Belarus draws attention to high-profile violations of human rights in Western countries

MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) – An event was arranged upon Belarus' initiative within the framework of the 47th session of the UN Human Rights Council to discuss “Human rights in the West: The lack of international oversight and response to violations of human rights”. The 47th session of the UN Human Rights Council is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

The discussion was arranged with assistance of the representative offices of Venezuela, China, and Russia in Geneva.

Head of the Central Office for Multilateral Diplomacy of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Irina Velichko presented the ministry's report on the most notorious violations of human rights in certain countries. The report was published on 30 June 2021.

In her speech the Belarusian diplomat noted that the facts the report mentions testify to multiple and systemic violations of human rights in Western countries. She encouraged Western countries to take care of their domestic problems in this field instead of accusing other countries. Attention was drawn to the need to restore the original meaning of human rights in line with international agreements and make them a real factor of wellbeing and stable development of societies and countries instead of a source of confrontation and political complaints.

Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Andrei Savinykh also made a speech during the event.

During the event representatives of international academic circles and non-governmental organizations mentioned there are problems with human rights in the collective West. They spoke in favor of the international community keeping an eye on the matter.
