BREST, 23 June (BelTA) – Belarus’ Brest and Russia’s Omsk have become twin cities. The agreement was signed during the visit of an Omsk delegation to Belarus on 23 June, BelTA has learned.

The agreement on the establishment of twinning relations between the Belarusian and Russian cities was signed by Brest Mayor Sergei Lobodinsky and Omsk Mayor Sergey Shelest.

The parties plan to cooperate in various fields. In particular, the agreement provides for the exchange of best practices in the economy, urban planning, transport infrastructure, housing, science, education, culture, sports and tourism. Brest and Omsk aim to develop trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural ties on the basis of partnership and mutual benefit. The parties agreed to promote the establishment of direct ties between industrial enterprises and companies, educational and scientific institutions, youth associations, creative unions, cultural, sports and tourism institutions.

Sergei Lobodinsky stressed that Brest residents will hospitably host delegations from Omsk. “We will find common ground for all kinds of contacts, primarily in the social sector. Of course, there are issues related to the development of cooperation chains on mutually beneficial terms for Omsk and Brest in order to comprehensively and mutually beneficially expand cooperation, the Brest governor said. The cities have areas of common interest. Dmitry Karbyshev is related to both the cities. He was born in Omsk, took part in the construction of the Brest Fortress.

According to Sergey Shelest, Brest is of special interest to Omsk residents as a tourist destination. “There are many enterprises with great industrial potential in Omsk. Large enterprises also operate in Brest. Road machinery, road surface marking (a very interesting topic for us) and urban landscaping are probably a priority. We will organize missions of our Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and specialists will decide on interaction ways, the Omsk mayor said.

Brest maintains friendly and partnership relations with more than a dozen Russian cities. The regional center has more than 30 twin cities in different countries of Europe and Asia. The list is updated on a regular basis. It is expected that the next agreement on cooperation will be concluded with Karakol from Kyrgyzstan.
