MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) - Belarus fully supports Türkiye's mediation efforts, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Türkiye Anatoly Glaz said in an interview with Anadolu Agency, BelTA reports.
The ambassador recalled that the first three rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine took place in Belarus.
"Therefore, our country, better than any other, understands Türkiye's role and the challenges of organizing negotiations and promoting dialogue," he noted.
Ambassador Anatoly Glaz emphasized that since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Belarus and Türkiye have been advocating for a peaceful resolution and regional stability. "That is why we fully support the efforts of our Turkish colleagues. Belarus borders Ukraine, so we also feel a deep concern for what is happening: we care about the victims and welcome any progress in the negotiation process," the ambassador stated.
The diplomat stressed that since 2022, around 400,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Belarus, with many choosing to stay. "For this reason, the Ukrainian conflict is also a deeply personal and humanitarian issue for us. You know that prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine take place in our country. Following agreements reached in Istanbul two weeks ago, another round of a '1000-for-1000' prisoner swap took place in Belarus. There is a direct connection," Ambassador Anatoly Glaz explained.
According to him, Belarus sincerely welcomes Türkiye's successes in the field of negotiations and appreciates its contributions. "As a neighboring country, we are highly interested in the swift resolution of the conflict and believe that Türkiye is fulfilling its mediating role excellently. We look forward with hope to the upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations, which may take place on 2 June in Istanbul, and sincerely wish them success," he added.
