Baghdad hosts Belarus-Iraq ministerial consultations

MINSK, 16 June (BelTA) - Another round of Belarus-Iraq ministerial consultations took place in Baghdad with the participation of Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolai Borisevich and Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq Nizar Al-Khairallah, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event marked the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Belarus and Iraq. The previous round of ministerial consultations took place in 2019 during the visit of the senior undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq to Minsk.

The parties discussed a wide range of issues related to Belarusian-Iraqi relations, including cooperation in education and humanitarian sectors, as well as improvement of the legal framework. Special emphasis was placed on intensification of trade and economic relations as a priority area for cooperation between the two countries.

On 14-15 June, the Belarusian deputy minister of foreign affairs also met with the ministers of industry and minerals, agriculture, trade, education, and research of Iraq, as well as the president of the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce and rector of Baghdad University. Agreements were reached to discuss bilateral cooperation in industrial cooperation, agriculture, and education at the level of the leadership of the relevant ministries.

The Iraqi side confirmed its readiness to send a business delegation to Belarus in the near future to develop contacts through the chambers of commerce of the two countries.
