Ambassador: West takes Union State more seriously than we do

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - The West takes the Union State more seriously than Belarus and Russia do, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev said in an interview with the ONT TV channel on 29 October, BelTA has learned.

Ambassador Dmitry Mezentsev cited "an excerpt from the bill confirming the Belarus Democracy Act." According to the diplomat, the U.S. Congress has prepared additions to this act of 2004. The document instructs the United States Secretary of State and the director of the National Security Agency to submit a reports on threats to the sovereignty and independence of Belarus from the Russian government.

"This Western pressure is directed not only against the Belarusian government and Belarus. It is also directed against Russia. This means that the West sees the Union State as a more serious and effective entity than we see it ourselves," Ambassador Dmitry Mezentsev said.

The ambassador added that Russia supports Belarus at all levels, "repeatedly confirming the continuous stability of relations." "What will the Union State be is a question, first of all, for Belarus, its needs, expectations," he said. The diplomat called on both sides to work more effectively to strengthen relations so that the union becomes more durable - not for the sake of current needs but for the sake of people.
