Almaty suggested as SCO humanitarian hub to deliver international aid to Afghanistan

DUSHANBE, 17 September (BelTA) - Kazakhstan suggests setting up an SCO humanitarian hub in Almaty to deliver international aid to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said as he spoke at the SCO summit in Dushanbe on 17 September, BelTA has learned.

The Kazakhstan president is convinced that the SCO can and must play an active role in settling the situation in Afghanistan.

“These days, there is a lot of talk around the world about the Afghan problem. The situation in this long-suffering country was also discussed yesterday at the CSTO summit. Kazakhstan sees the future Afghanistan as a truly independent and united state, living in peace with itself and its neighbors. At this fateful and historic moment, the multinational people of Afghanistan should not be left alone in the face of unprecedented challenges. I believe that the SCO with its huge influence can and should play its active role in achieving peace and harmony in the country. Only through collective efforts can we ensure regional security against current threats,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

“We are ready to provide feasible assistance to solve urgent humanitarian and economic problems faced by Afghanistan. Given the existing infrastructure and logistics capabilities of Kazakhstan, we propose to organize an SCO humanitarian hub in Almaty to deliver international aid to Afghanistan. I am convinced that this step will enhance the role of our organization in solving the acute problems of the region, and will also harmoniously complement the activities of the UN and other international organizations,” the president of Kazakhstan said.

In his words, regional security issues are becoming extremely relevant at the present stage. Kazakhstan is ready to continue joint efforts to effectively combat drug trafficking and the drug business, which financially feeds terrorism and extremism. In addition, cyber security issues have come to the forefront in recent years, and transnational crime in the economic sector is also an acute problem.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his speech also spoke on the topic of combating the coronavirus pandemic, noting the importance of a coordinated approach to mass immunization of the population. He suggested that other countries use Kazakhstan's vaccine. “Accelerating the procedure of mutual recognition of vaccination passports in the SCO states and integrating them into multilateral systems will help overcome the difficulties and challenges faced by our countries,” he said.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the importance of restoration and development of trade and economic cooperation, and called to ensure the early launch of common financial mechanisms for accelerated implementation of joint economic projects. He sees the development of the stock market and financial technologies as a promising direction. The topic of development of the green economy was also touched upon.

The president of Kazakhstan also made a number of proposals to improve transport and logistics sustainability. Here, in particular, is the task to increase the attractiveness of the new Silk Road.

“Dear colleagues, we do not need big games in Eurasia. We need a breakthrough to build a peaceful, secure, sustainable future for all. Our states have all the conditions for this - experience, mechanisms, infrastructure, a common desire to build up our partnership and meet each other halfway. Our common goal is to turn the SCO space into a stable, economically developed and prosperous macro-region,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
