MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) - The visit of a delegation from China led by Zhang Qingwei, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and member of the CPC Central Committee, to Belarus will contribute to strengthening and expanding Belarusian-Chinese interparliamentary cooperation, Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, told BelTA.

The Chinese parliamentary delegation is paying a visit to Minsk on 12-14 June.

According to Sergei Aleinik, the visit was organized almost immediately after the visit of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Beijing and his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The high-level talks in Beijing took place in a friendly atmosphere and confirmed the course towards further strengthening of an all-weather and comprehensive strategic partnership.

As for the interparliamentary cooperation, the chairman of the Standing Committee recalled that the Belarusian head of state met with Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in Beijing in March 2023, and Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova paid an official visit to China in 2024.

“Such meetings demonstrate the great importance that Belarus attaches to the development of interparliamentary relations with the People's Republic of China,” Sergei Aleinik continued. “China is an important foreign policy partner of Belarus, a reliable friend, and the Belarusian-Chinese all-weather and comprehensive strategic partnership is based on mutual friendship, respect, and support for each other, including in the international arena. Our countries are jointly promoting the Belt and Road Initiative. Belarus supports Xi Jinping's strategic peace initiatives, including the idea of building a community with a shared future for mankind, which is especially important in the context of global turbulence.”

According to the chairman of the Standing Committee, an important item on the agenda of the current visit by Chinese parliamentarians will be the second meeting of the High-Level Committee on Cooperation between the Legislative Bodies of Belarus and China. The co-chairs of the committee, which was established in accordance with an interparliamentary agreement in 2023, are Natalya Kochanova, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the Republic of Belarus and Zhang Qingwei, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

Sergei Aleinik noted that the meeting will consider a wide range of issues related to Belarusian-Chinese cooperation, including the prospects for interregional contacts. In his words, the visit is aimed at implementing Belarusian-Chinese agreements at the highest level, including intensifying cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
