MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) - Belarus views BRICS and the SCO as regional organizations that contribute to building a multipolar, fair and stable world order, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Aleinik said an interview with BelTA.
Last year, Belarus became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and also received the status of a partner country in BRICS. “Head of state Aleksandr Lukashenko approved the strategies of Belarus' participation in the SCO and BRICS, which testifies to the importance of these events,” Sergei Aleinik said. “Belarus views them as regional organizations that contribute to building a multipolar, fair and stable world order based on universally recognized principles of international law and that have a great potential for mutually beneficial trade and economic, investment, cultural and humanitarian cooperation.”
He noted that BRICS already has a parliamentary dimension. Last year a delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus took part (for the first time) in the BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg (even before the country received the status of a partner country). The Belarusian delegation made a special emphasis on building a multipolar world and emphasized the role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting a constructive agenda to de-escalate international tensions.
“Participation of Belarus’ parliamentary delegation in such forums makes it possible to convey the position of Belarus on topical matters on the international agenda, to express support for building a fairer multipolar world, emphasize the peace-loving foreign policy of our state and to intensify inter-parliamentary cooperation with a number of states, including Asian and African countries,” Sergei Aleinik said.
“By the way, while there is already inter-parliamentary cooperation in BRICS, we are still in the process of building inter-parliamentary cooperation within the SCO,” Sergei Aleinik noted. “The Council of the Republic intends to build inter-parliamentary cooperation within the SCO in accordance with the main objectives of our country's participation in this organization. These include the protection of the state interests of Belarus at the multilateral level, creating favorable external conditions to ensure the sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security of our country, and promotion of sustainable development, comprehensive and balanced economic growth, social and cultural development in the region through joint actions on the basis of equal partnership”.
“It is important to raise the international standing of the Republic of Belarus as a peace-loving state, to promote coordinated approaches of the SCO member states, observers and partners to the dialogue on the main issues of international politics in international organizations,” Sergei Aleinik summarized.
