MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) – Belarus is in favor of introducing a parliamentary dimension to the SCO and strengthening the role of parliament in BRICS, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic of Belarus Sergei Aleinik told the media following the joint meeting of the foreign affairs commissions of the upper houses of the Parliaments of Belarus and Russia in Minsk on 13 November, BelTA has learned.
"Such meetings are very important. We coordinate our positions and approaches and outline the ways of our further interaction within the international interparliamentary platforms," Sergei Aleinik said. "Today we have discussed a wide range of issues related to cooperation with international interparliamentary structures. We have observed a good level of interaction within the framework of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, the Interparliamentary Union, interregional structures. We are significantly expanding the range of interparliamentary cooperation with the parliaments of the global majority countries: Asia, Africa, Latin America. We intend to promote this work."
According to him, the meeting demonstrated the similarity of views, interests, and approaches to addressing major regional and global issues. "We clearly understand that the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting to Greater Eurasia. Therefore, the issues of global security are of paramount importance. The 2nd Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security shows this," Sergei Aleinik added.
He stressed that Belarus is committed to active work in the SCO and BRICS and is in favor of introducing a parliamentary dimension to the SCO and strengthening the parliamentary role in BRICS.
