The city is located in Kazakhstan and is home to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, one of the largest in the world. The city was founded in 1955 to host the cosmodrome. A special feature of the city is that together with the Baikonur Cosmodrome it is part of the Baikonur Complex leased by Russia for the period until 2050. Baikonur is a place where spacecraft and satellites are launched. It has residential quarters, schools, retail outlets, as well as infrastructure facilities related to space programs.
