an endangered species, also called the Persian wild ass or Persian
zebra, has increased to over 50 at Kavir (Garmsar) National Park, a
provincial official says.
Saeed Yousefpour, Director-General of the Environmental Protection Department of Semnan Province said the revival of this valuable species was fully with the efforts of environmentalists and the support of experts and managers.
“Since 1984, the Persian onager has been extinct in the Kavir National Park area, but with the planning and transfer of this species from Turan National Park, its population reached more than 50 individuals,” he said.
The Persian zebra, one of Iran’s most prominent endangered species, was once widespread in country’s central plains, but habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and lack of water resources pushed its population to the brink of extinction.
