New excavation season starts at largest Neolithic settlement in Iran

MOSCOW, 15 April (BelTA - TV BRICS) - An archaeological expedition has started the third season of excavations at Chogha Golan, the largest Neolithic settlement in Iran, located at the foot of the Zagros Mountains near Mehran city. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The project, authorised by the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, aims to study one of the most important Neolithic site in the region.

According to Hojjat Darabi, Head of the Chogha Golan archaeological team, both vertical and horizontal excavations will be carried out at the two sites this season. The research aims to uncover artefacts dating back to the ninth and eighth millennia BC, which will enhance understanding of the origins of agriculture and settled life in the region.

Darabi also noted the discovery of a variety of animal and plant remains from different periods of the settlement. These findings are expected to shed light on the processes of plant and animal domestication in the Zagros region and West Asia in general.

Chogha Golan, located in a semi-arid region 30 kilometres north of Mehran, is one of the earliest ceramics-free Neolithic settlements found in Iran. The inhabitants of Chogha Golan were mainly engaged in hunting and utilising wild plants.
