Mega fin whale skeleton installed in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, 10 December (BelTA - China Daily). - The 24-meter-long skeleton of a fin whale that was found in Shanghai waters in March 2017 was installed in the Shanghai Natural History Museum on Thursday. The 3-ton skeleton is the longest of its kind in China.

The museum took 18 days to cut up the 40-ton carcass before spending three and a half years removing the flesh and fat, and another three months to assemble it outside the museum.

When found, the whale's left flipper was missing and its left lower jawbone broken. To prepare the skeleton for exhibition, the missing flippers and lower mandibles were substituted with replicas to ensure the skeleton structure is balanced.

The skeletal structure was transported to the museum on the evening of Dec 5 and was assembled by Thursday.

Located in the basement of the museum, the latest installation is double the length of the 11-meter-long Bryde's whale skeleton the museum previously displayed.
