Indonesian surfer Bronson Meydi wins WSL junior championship

JAKARTA, 21 January (BelTA - ANTARA) - Indonesian surfer Bronson Meydi won the World Surf League (WSL) 2024 World Junior Championships held in San Juan, La Union, the Philippines.

In the final, the 20-year-old scored a total of 18.80 points, defeating Australian surfer Winter Vincent, who earned 17.84 points.

"It was one of my goals this year to win this, especially at the beginning of the year," Meydi said in an interview following his historic win.

Vincent initially led the competition with scores of 8.77 and 9.07 points, putting him temporarily ahead. However, Meydi delivered a perfect score of 10.00 points for his first wave using aerial surfing techniques and added 8.80 points on his second wave, securing the championship title and making history for Indonesian surfing.

For the 2024 World Junior Championships, the Indonesian national surfing team featured two male athletes: Meydi and I Made Pajar Ariyana, who ranked highest in the Men's Junior Tour Asia.

"Meydi's achievement is remarkable because he had to qualify by competing in the previous junior event in Asia, where he ranked 1st and Ariyana ranked 2nd," said Indonesian national surfing team coach Arya Subyakto.

The two Indonesian surfers competed against 48 athletes from 14 countries. However, I Made Pajar Ariyana was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to Vincent.

With his victory in the junior championships, Meydi has secured a spot in the Challenger Series, featuring 100 of the best athletes from five continents.

"Hopefully, Meydi's win will inspire enthusiasm and further elevate Indonesian surfing," Subyakto added.
