Indonesia pushes multilateral cooperation to tackle plastic pollution

JAKARTA, 5 June (BelTA - ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Environment is committed to tackling plastic pollution through international cooperation, while carefully balancing this with the nation's economic reliance on plastic use.

The ministry's director of waste reduction and circular economy development, Agus Rusli, stated that Indonesia actively pushes for stronger global resolutions on plastic pollution in various international forums, including the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

This also involves managing sustainable funds for plastic control, especially ahead of World Environment Day 2025.

"Indonesia served as the 5th Vice President of UNEA from 2019-2022, where we championed global issues such as water, education, and plastic pollution," he explained during an online discussion titled "Dissecting the Problem of Plastic Pollution in Indonesia" on Wednesday.

Rusli added that Indonesia is a key player in the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) talks on a global plastic agreement.

In this forum, Indonesia advocates for the inclusion of marine sustainability and microplastic issues in the international negotiation agenda.

Indonesia maintains a middle ground in these global negotiations, not aligning with ambitious countries like Norway or oil-producing nations such as Saudi Arabia, Rusli said.

"That's because we still need the functions and benefits of plastic, so there must be a balance," he noted.

Despite this, the government has enacted regulations to address plastic waste.

This regulation sets a target for producers to reduce waste by 30 percent of total generation by 2029, encouraging industry innovation in sustainable solutions like eco-friendly packaging and efficient recycling.

The Indonesian Ministry of Environment will continue its active involvement in all international negotiations to resolve plastic waste issues, especially microplastics, which pose significant threats to both the environment and human health.
