A batch of about 500 fish of the senior age group (150kg) was prepared. Sterlet was transported by a special vehicle equipped with oxygen and air aeration systems to make sure the fish is safe and is not stressed after the journey
Restocking the Pripyat River with sterlet will help increase the Dnieper population of this fish which is endangered
Sterlet is the only kind of sturgeon species occurring in Belarusian rivers. In the first half of the 20th century the sterlet population in the Dnieper basin was fairly big. In 1981, this fish was included in Belarus’ Red List of Endangered Species under the category I (CR) - the species, which population is small or, the species under the threat of extinction. Only a very limited amount of sterlet is allowed for fishing
“However, fishermen should not hurry to take up fishing rods. It will take more than one year for the sterlet population to reach a commercial scale,” said Aleksei Chistodarsky, an information officer of the UNDP/GEF projects. Today fishing of sterlet in Belarus as the species on the List of Endangered Species is prohibited. In case of fishing this species poachers are fined. The fine for every sterlet caught is 3.3 base amounts (now a base amount is equal to Br35,000).
