ZHITKOVICHI, 13 May (BelTA) - The aurochs-like animals in the Middle Pripyat nature reserve of Zhitkovichi District welcomed offspring.
In an effort to conserve biodiversity, 15 bulls of the Heck cattle were brought to the Belarusian floodplain meadows of Pogost natural boundary (Middle Pripyat nature reserve) in 2020. The animals were released into the wild and have been grazing freely on an area of 200 hectares.
This spring they had a second offspring of three calves, and now the herd numbers 23 animals.
The rewilding initiative is part of the Wetlands project funded by the Global Environment Fund and implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry of Belarus. The key partner of the project is OAO Turovshchina, Zhitkovichi District.
