Zayats: Belarus looks to harvest 1.2m tonnes of rapeseed this year

MINSK, 29 July (BelTA) - This year Belarus expects to harvest about 1.2 million tonnes of rapeseed, a crop important for the food industry and for the fodder stocks, Leonid Zayats, Chairman of the Commission on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government of the Council of the Republic, the president's authorized representatives in Mogilev Oblast, said on the air of ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“It is a protein crop, which is suitable for fodder purposes, edible oils. Belarus has increased the cultivation of winter and spring rape crops. This year we are looking to harvest of 1.1-1.2 million tonnes. The yields is almost 30 centners per hectare. This is a record high harvest,” he said.

Leonid Zayats recalled that when Aleksandr Lukashenko was elected president for the first time, there were food shortages in the country and the head of state set the task to ensure food security. “Shelves were empty, people were issued food stamps. The president demanded to provide food to people at any cost, he supported the farms, did not let them go belly up. At the dawn of our state, the president made a very correct decision: to ensure equal conditions for large collective farms and farmers that wanted to work on the Belarusian land,” Leonid Zayats said.

He added that the agricultural industry lacked fuel, spare parts for farm machines, equipment back then. “When Aleksandr Lukashenko came to power, he insisted on technological discipline and increased responsibility. Thanks to the modernization of our agricultural machine engineering companies and the increased production of phosphate and nitrogen fertilizers, agriculture got back on its feet. Over these years we have provided our population with everything they need,” Leonid Zayats said.

He emphasized that the president deeply understands the problems of the village, rural communities as he himself is a country man and knows the work firsthand. “Thanks to this understanding, we find full support from the state,” Leonid Zayats added.

He also said that the president's timely decision to develop the processing industry and build dairy complexes played a significant role in strengthening the agricultural industry. “This decision by the president was thoughtful and far-sighted, because the raw materials were of a slightly lower quality then. The new farms produce high-quality raw materials for the processing industry. The head of state has set a task to turn the remaining dairy farms into complexes and to accomplish this task by 2030. Of course, it costs money and labor input, but this creates growth opportunities for the dairy cattle breeding. The modern complexes manufacture extra-grade milk, which is suitable for baby food, cheese making, and all other high-quality dairy products,” Leonid Zayats noted.

As the president's authorized representatives in Mogilev Oblast, Leonid Zayats pledged to take all measures to ensure that field work is carried out on time, at a high level and without losses. First of all, according to him, the task is to harvest grain crops on time, using every minute of good weather.
