MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – Cooperation between Belarus and Zimbabwe in agriculture has demonstrated its effectiveness, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich said during the visit of the Belarusian government delegation to Zimbabwe, BelTA has learned.
According to Viktor Karankevich, the countries’ flagship joint project is the program for Zimbabwe's agriculture mechanization, and Belarus has already contributed to increasing crop yields. "When the program began in 2020, Zimbabwe's wheat harvest was estimated at 150,000 tonnes. In 2024, as a result of the first two phases of the joint program, the wheat harvest more than tripled, exceeding 550,000 tonnes. This exemplary case is significant for many countries in Africa, including Zimbabwe's neighbors," he said.
Another important area of cooperation remains the construction of grain drying complexes: it is planned to build four complexes in Zimbabwe and modernize two existing ones. "This will enhance the efficiency of the country's agriculture and renew the entire machinery fleet using Belarusian technologies and expertise. In the future, it is expected not only to assemble and commission this equipment, but also to maintain it in Zimbabwe. A comprehensive approach is envisaged," Viktor Karankevich stated.
Today, on 16 April, the government delegation has a busy schedule, according to the government's press service. The delegation is set to meet with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to discuss new joint projects, to attend a ceremony to transfer Belarusian equipment as part of the third phase of the agricultural mechanization program, to take part in a commission meeting and to sign several bilateral documents.
