Trade between EAEU, Myanmar triples since 2019

MINSK, 26 June (BelTA) - Trade between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Myanmar has more than tripled since 2019, BelTA learned from the press service of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

On the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Forum in Minsk, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Bakytzhan Sagintayev held a working meeting with Chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing. The parties discussed cooperation between the EAEU nations and Myanmar in accordance with the Memorandum of Cooperation.

“Since the memorandum we have witnessed positive trends across a wide range of economic agendas of our cooperation. From 2019 to 2024 the trade between the EAEU states and Myanmar increased more than three times, exceeding $ 1.5 billion,” Bakytzhan Sagintayev said. The head of the EEC Board stressed that increasing the awareness of the parties about each other's trade and economic opportunities will provide the necessary conditions for closer interaction.

Bakytzhan Sagintayev and Min Aung Hlaing agreed that the interaction between business communities will give an additional impetus to the dialogue between the EAEU and Myanmar. This will allow, among other things, to identify new promising areas of cooperation.

Myanmar major exports to the EAEU countries include rice, coffee, palm oil, cocoa beans. Imports to Myanmar are dominated by mineral fertilizers, consumer goods, machinery and equipment, metals, edible oils, cement, and medicines.
