Spring sowing in Belarus over 90% complete

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – Spring crops in Belarus have been sown on 2.2 million hectares, which is 90.6% of the target area, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry.

As of 20 May, spring cereals and leguminous crops (including corn, buckwheat, and millet) were planted on the area of 1.079 million hectares (100.1% of the plan).

The sowing of sugar beet and spring rapeseed has been completed. The sowing of flax is in progress only in Vitebsk Oblast where 41,600 hectares or 97.8% of the area designated for this crop has been planted.

The sowing of the following crops is nearing completion: corn (948,800 hectares, or 83.9% of the area), potatoes (21,700 hectares, or 96.9%), vegetables (3,840 hectares, or 83.5%), annual grasses (245,300 hectares, or 80.3%).

Work is underway to sow buckwheat (14,000 hectares, or 46%) and millet (2,560 hectares, or 37.1%).

The total area of spring crops in Belarus this year is estimated at almost 2.5 million hectares.

Winter crops are largely used for forage - as green fodder, for grazing and preparation of grass fodder: 24,000 hectares, or 13%, have already been harvested.

Work on the chemical protection of crops is underway, however, it is held back by frequent rains.
