Share of e-commerce at 8.1% in Belarus

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – The share of e-commerce in Belarus has grown to 8.1%, Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Aleksei Bogdanov told journalists at the Trade Dialogue international forum, BelTA has learned.

“E-commerce is on the up and up; in the first half of this year its share rose to 8.1%. Although just a few years ago it was only slightly above 3%. We have amended the law on trade, spelled out in more detail regulations on new forms of e-commerce, like marketplaces, aggregators. The number of online stores has already reached 30,000. They include traditional online stores, marketplaces, and various forms of e-commerce,” said Aleksei Bogdanov.

He emphasized that despite all the twists and turns of world politics and global crises, trade in Belarus is on the rise. “Over the current half of the year, the number of retail outlets and catering facilities has grown. Over the half of the year the retail sector expanded by another 11.5%. This is really big. Our target for the current year is a 4.5% increase, and we believe we are on track to make this happen. We see good dynamics in the trade sector, including e-commerce, which will be discussed at a separate event during today’s forum,” the minister noted.

The forum will also focus on the promotion of non-food products like household appliances, light industry products, HoReCa - cafes, restaurants. “Perhaps, these discussions will prompt some adjustments to regulations,” the minister of antimonopoly regulation and trade added.

According to him, the main goal of the forum is to establish a meaningful dialogue between manufacturers, suppliers and trade. “Importers, suppliers and manufacturers, the trade sector have different interests. Therefore, we discuss pending issues, come up with solutions and approaches in order to accommodate everyone’s interests,” Aleksei Bogdanov added.
