Sergeyenko: Belarusian technologies might be useful for Lao economy

MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – Belarusian technologies can meet the needs of the Lao economy, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said as he met with Lao Minister of Planning and Investment Phet Phomphiphak, BelTA has learned.

The meeting discussed ways to step up cooperation between the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as the work of the Belarus-Laos Joint Cooperation Commission. The chairman of the House of Representatives expressed confidence that Phet Phomphiphak will be able to add momentum to the work of the commission and help effectively implement the agreements reached earlier. Igor Sergeyenko asked the Lao minister of planning and investment to share his vision of the agenda of the next meeting of the commission, which is planned to be held at the initiative of the Lao side, as well as further steps to promote bilateral cooperation in trade, economy, science, technology and other spheres.

“Belarusian technologies can largely meet the needs of the Lao economy. We are ready to share our expertise and knowledge, especially in the field of agricultural engineering, production of trucks and cars, personnel training across a broad range of professional fields,” the speaker informed.

Belarus is interested in exporting trucks, motorcycles and bicycles, food products (powdered milk, beef, poultry, cheeses), medicines and other goods to Laos.

The chairman of the House of Representatives told Phet Phomphiphak that Belarus had already prepared commercial proposals for the upcoming meeting of the Joint Cooperation Commission. Igor Sergeyenko also suggested considering the possibility of holding a Belarus-Laos business forum during the visit of a high-level delegation to Belarus.

Igor Sergeyenko confirmed the interest of Belarusian manufacturers in participating in international exhibitions and fairs held in Laos and other countries of Southeast Asia, and invited Laotian partners to take part in similar events in Belarus and other EAEU states. “The Belagro international exhibition has been held near Minsk for over 30 years, and it has become a national brand,” the speaker emphasized. Igor Sergeyenko invited representatives of the Laotian business community to visit it in June 2025 to study the potential of the Belarusian agro-industrial sector.

A reminder, the Belarusian parliamentary delegation headed by Chairman of the House of Representatives Igor Sergeyenko is paying an official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic. On 19 October, Igor Sergeyenko spoke at the  first plenary session of the 45th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations held under the theme “The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN” in Vientiane.

The Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA) was established in 1977. Currently, ASEAN has 10 member states: Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. The AIPA has 23 observers. The parliament of Belarus received the observer status in September 2011 in Phnom Penh (Kingdom of Cambodia) at the 32nd AIPA General Assembly. This gave Belarus an access to a platform for a permanent dialogue with the member countries of the organization on economic, political, social and humanitarian issues. Belarusian MPs regularly participate in events organized by the AIPA, including the annual AIPA General Assembly.
