VITEBSK, 28 June (BelTA) – The joint determination to achieve concrete results in bolstering bilateral ties lies at the heart of the partnership between Leningrad Oblast and Belarus. Governor of Russia’s Leningrad Oblast Alexander Drozdenko mentioned it during the plenary session on the role of interregional cooperation in building an innovative economy of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, BelTA has learned.

Leningrad Oblast has established effective interregional ties with Mogilev Oblast, Vitebsk Oblast, Gomel Oblast, and Minsk Oblast. The Russian region intends to sign an agreement with Brest Oblast on the sidelines of the current Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia.

“At the heart of our partnership you can find the joint determination to achieve concrete results in bolstering bilateral ties. Leningrad Oblast is a leading region in terms of development of comprehensive multilevel cooperation with Belarus. Belarus occupies the first position among the CIS states in terms of import and export. Which means we absolutely have a two-way street here,” Alexander Drozdenko said.

In January-May 2024 mutual trade increased by 23.5%. The presidents of the two countries want the regions to double the trade turnover. This is why the parties are looking for new points of contact with Belarus.

The 11th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia is taking place in Vitebsk, Polotsk, and Novopolotsk on 27-28 June. It focuses on the role of interregional cooperation in building an innovative economy of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The forum has been organized by the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.
