Russia ratifies documents on deferral of payments on its government loans by Belarus

 

MOSCOW, 20 March (BelTA) – Russia has completed the ratification of two Belarus-Russia documents on amending a number of agreements. The ratification laws were approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin and published on the Russian official legal Internet portal on 20 March, BelTA has learned.

These documents concern the deferral of Belarus' payments on Russian government loans. The first document is the Belarus-Russia intergovernmental agreement on amending the terms of some Belarus-Russia intergovernmental agreements signed in Moscow on 25 April 2024. The second document is a protocol signed in Moscow on 11 July 2024 that amends the agreement of 25 April 2024.

On 4 March the ratification laws were approved by the State Duma of Russia, and on 14 March, they were passed by the Federation Council - the upper house of the Russian parliament.

As was noted during the ratification, these documents are classified. They provide for the postponement of payments by Belarus of the principal debt from 1 April 2024 to 31 December 2024 and interest on payments from 1 July to 31 December 2024 for the period of 2031-2036. According to Deputy Finance Minister of Russia Vladimir Kolychev, the total amount of payments subject to deferment is about $800 million.
