Results of meeting on Belarus’ tobacco industry summed up

MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) - Conceptual decisions on how the tobacco industry will develop from 2025 have been made at the level of the head of state, Chairman of the Belarusian state food industry concern Belgospischeprom Oleg Zhidkov told the media following the meeting chaired by President Aleksandr Lukashenko to discuss ways of improving the production and sale of tobacco products in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

"The tobacco industry in Belarus has always been under the control of the state. It is understandable. It is a specific business and cannot do without special control," Oleg Zhidkov said. The tobacco industry generates a significant part of budget revenues, hence the attention of the state to it.

In Belarus, the tobacco industry comprises three companies, including a state-owned one. As Oleg Zhidkov explained, the factories faced strong sanctions pressure, which necessitated taking prompt decisions on a number of issues,  restructuring the principles and format of work in order to provide the enterprises with raw materials and orders, and to ensure guaranteed budget revenues in 2025 and, most importantly, to ensure further control over the tobacco market, "which allows us to pre-empt the negative aspects that we may expect from our unfriendly partners in this environment.”

“A number of decisions were adopted at the meeting to boost the tobacco industry starting from 2025. The accents have been set out to plan production and fulfillment of orders by our enterprises,” the head of the concern said. He stressed that the meeting addressed “issues of purely organizational nature”.

“There is no need for any additional investment to support the industry,” Oleg Zhidkov said. “Our enterprises are self-sufficient and show efficiency that let them plan their further development. There is no need for additional help today. We have outlined new approaches, which require coordination with the head of state.”

According to the head of the concern, the adopted decisions require further detailing so that each of the industry participants “understands its area of responsibility and expected contribution to the industry”.
