KIROVSK DISTRICT, 14 February (BelTA) - Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko spoke about the tasks facing the Belarusian vegetable selection science in the context of the strategy of greenhouse vegetable growing in Belarus for 2023-2027 as he toured the Rassvet agricultural company named after K.P. Orlovsky near the town of Kirovsk, Mogilev Oblast, BelTA learned.
“The efficiency of production depends on the yield, because the margins in this industry are not so high due to high costs, despite the economic assistance,” Roman Golovchenko noted. “The margins are quite sensitive to changes in the cost of production: a slight drop in the yield creates economic problems. Therefore, it is very important to strictly adhere to the technology and all rules in order to ensure high yields.”

According to the prime minister, work is underway on domestic solutions for the domestic vegetable farming, including seeds and fertilizers. “We have producers of mineral-wool substrates. We are working on fertilizers and seeds. I instructed to test seeds of Belarusian selection at the DorORS company, and the experiment has yielded good results. The crop turned out to be very resistant to pests and diseases, more resistant than the Dutch hybrid. But our hybrid is short-fruited, while the medium-fruited are more marketable. Belarusian scientists have been instructed to select a medium-fruited hybrid.”
Roman Golovchenko noted that economic sense must be at the heart of all efforts. “The main thing is to get the final product, which is home-grown, Belarusian. We do not seek to replace imports at any cost. But when it is economically justified, we will certainly do,” he explained.
