Opinion: EAEU expansion is a real prospect

MOSCOW, 4 June (BelTA) - The expansion of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is a real prospect, Aide to the Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Iya Malkina told a press briefing on 4 June, BelTA has learned.

According to Iya Malkina, the EEC delegation was repeatedly asked about the possibility of expanding the EAEU on the sidelines of the ongoing International Economic Forum in St Petersburg, Russia. “This is probably due to the fact that more and more countries are showing interest in the prospects and opportunities that participation in the Eurasian integration can provide,” she said.

The aide to the chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission said that Uzbekistan and Cuba became observers in the EAEU in 2020, while Moldova did it earlier. “The interest that the governments of these states have in the tools, which help jointly overcome some economic crises, shows that the expansion of the union is not just a myth, but a real prospect,” said Iya Malkina.

She specified that in order to join the EAEU, the will of the state that wants to join the union is needed in the first place. “Therefore, we are certainly waiting for signals from the countries that are interested in joint integration economic projects. All decisions on accession are made in the union with a broad public discussion,” added Iya Malkina.

Currently, the EAEU includes Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
