Opinion: Belarusian science ready for challenges facing global economy

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – Belarusian science is ready for challenges facing the world economy and is capable of developing competitive high technology products and services, Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology Aleksandr Shumilin said at the opening of the 14th edition of the research conference “Economic Growth of the Republic of Belarus: Globalization, Innovation, Sustainability” on 20 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee on Science and Technology.

According to him, Belarus constantly improves its R&D and innovation sectors, including by using international best practices in science and technology. “The government has set a task to carry out innovative projects to establish high-technology manufacturing facilities using Belarusian solutions in the regions, taking into account their competitive advantages. Of course, scientists play an important role in achieving this task,” Aleksandr Shumilin noted. “This year, we should complete several important tasks, such as launching the state innovative development program and R&D programs as well as getting access for Belarusian high-tech products to new export markets,” he added.

Belarus annually develops dozens of innovative products with high commercialization potential, Aleksandr Shumilin pointed out. For example, OAO Planar designed equipment for creating topological structures on photomasks, which is the first of its kind in the world and is supplied to Germany, Israel, South Korea, and China. The Belarusian electric transport manufacturer Belkommunmash launched the production of electric buses. It has made and sold more than 80 electric buses, some of which to Russia. Belarusian hospitals adopted a new method of treating aneurysm of the thoracic part of the aorta using an exo prosthetic from biological materials. This solution helps reduce the operational trauma, the period of treatment and the number of postoperative complications. The cost of treatment is also 20% cheaper thanks to this. In Belarus, the introduction of this method has already helped save more than $400,000.

High-technology equipment to determine the authenticity of documents, banknotes, and securities developed by the Belarusian company Regula is used by border services, law enforcement agencies, and banks in more than 80 countries, including the United States, the UK, Germany, and Israel. Unique X-ray security screening and medical imaging equipment, equipment for non-destructive material testing designed and manufactured by Belarus' ADANI is exported to 70 countries, including the United States, South Korea, Japan, and the European Union member states. Belarusian hospitals also use ADANI's CT scanners that are 30% less expensive than imported ones.
