New pulp, pasteboard enterprises to help increase paper packaging output in Belarus

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – The commissioning of enterprises to make pulp and pasteboard will allow increasing the output of paper packaging in Belarus, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Belarusian timber, woodworking, pulp and paper industry concern Bellesbumprom Mikhail Kasko on 17 February.

The official said: “We've been working for quite some time on matters concerning the production of paper packaging. Corrugated paper boxes and egg boxes have been manufactured for decades already. But new kinds of packaging with an upper layer that appeals to consumers are also necessary. We need cellulose for it and we are already working on it.”

Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill has commissioned facilities to make bleached sulfated pulp. According to Mikhail Kasko, the company exports the product and sells it domestically for advanced processing. For instance, the Shklov-based newsprint mill uses the cellulose to make wrapping paper, which Bellesbumprom enterprises use to make paper bags and sacks and sell them on the home market, including to producers of flour and other bulk products.

Various kinds of pasteboard are also needed to make paper packaging. “Our enterprises also make uncoated pasteboard. Once facilities of the Dobrush-based paper mill Geroi Truda are commissioned, we will be able to make coated pasteboard. Pasteboard can be used to make office products and paper tableware as well as packaging for milk and medications,” the official pointed out.

“Quite a broad choice of new kinds of packaging will become available. It has not been made previously by Bellesbumprom and the country as a whole. We intend to expand the lineup of packaging materials by the end of 2021 and in early 2022 in order to satisfy the domestic demand as much as possible,” the official concluded.
