Minsk, Moscow plan to build high-speed rail

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) - Plans are in place to build a high-speed rail between Minsk and Moscow, Chairman of the Transport Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Evgeny Moskvichev told reporters in Minsk on 23 May, BelTA has learned.

"This rail will help to travel quicker from Minsk, for example, to Moscow or from Minsk to St. Petersburg. This year, Russia launched the construction of the high-speed rail between Moscow and St. Petersburg that will cover 750km in two hours. The distance between Moscow and Minsk is approximately the same," Evgeny Moskvichev said.

This will benefit the residents of the two countries, the chairman of the commission said. "We will be moving towards a single transport market, unified road transportation, and unified rail transportation. This all will facilitate the development of the two countries, the Union State. This will allow for the quick and safe delivery of both passengers and cargo," he added.

Minsk played host to a joint meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly's commissions on budget, taxes and financial market, industry and trade, economic policy and transport on 23 May. The meeting participants discussed the development of interregional and cross-border rail and road transport in popular areas, a mechanism to subsidize international air transportation, and to form passenger tariffs on railway transport between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.
