Minister praises Belarusian forestry industry performance in 2024

MINSK, 4 January (BelTA) – Belarusian Forestry Minister Aleksandr Kulik told BelTA about the performance of the country’s forestry industry in 2024 and how the industry changed over the 30 years of the institute of presidency of the Republic of Belarus.

Aleksandr Kulik started his career as a forester in 1994, so he can assess the development of the national forestry industry over 30 years better than anyone. “The area of the forest fund has increased by 1 million hectares over the period. The percentage of mature forests was 3-5% in 1994. Now it is 21%. Forestry is a very important sector of the Belarusian economy. Some ten years ago the volume of felling was 12 million cubic meters in the country. Now we are going to round up the year with 20 million cubic meters. This is a 100% supply of processing industry enterprises, such as Ivatsevichidrev, Borisovdrev, i.e. enterprises of Bellesbumprom Concern, which make products with high added value,” Aleksandr Kulik said.

In 2024 the industry increased by 1.8 million cubic meters as for the sale of round timber as against 2023. “We will report to the head of state on the fulfillment of his instructions,” the minister said.

As for the last year's storms in July, all five regions have completed the work with wind and storm logging areas. “There are about 3,000 hectares to complete in Gomel Oblast. We have set ourselves a task to do it by the end of January. As for reforestation, we plan to create 12,000-13,000 hectares on the developed areas. We did 5,500 hectares in the autumn. The rest will be completed in the spring,” Aleksandr Kulik said.
