Minister: Belarus' electricity consumption up by 5% in 2024

MOGILEV, 13 February (BelTA) - Electricity consumption in Belarus went up by 5% in 2024, Belarusian Energy Minister Aleksei Kushnarenko said during a ceremony to launch the Solominka closed two-transformer substation 110/10kV in Mogilev, BelTA has learned.

“Electricity consumption in our country is increasing. Last year it grew by 5% amounting to 43.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh). The reasons include the government's stimulating and supporting measures and the commissioning of new all-electric homes. The country has already commissioned 1.7 million square meters of such housing within four years. It will reach about 2 million square meters within the next five-year period,” the minister said.

Belarus needs to create a reliable and safe infrastructure for such housing, Aleksei Kushnarenko noted. Launching a new substation in Mogilev is a vivid example of this, as electricity consumption in the country is still on the rise.

“The trend towards improving electricity infrastructure is important for us. We have built a nuclear power plant. We record the growth of electricity consumption in the country. Therefore, we must take all measures to meet the demand of our consumers,” he stated. "For example, the amount of electricity used by electric transport totaled 39.6 million kWh in 2024, which was twice as much as in 2023. Households also actively consume electricity for heating and hot water supply: 880 million kWh last year, which was 34% more than in 2023.”
