Karankevich: Belarus, Russia continue building common gas market

MOSCOW, 10 October (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia continue negotiations on building the common gas market, Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich said at the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, BelTA has learned.

Viktor Karankevich noted that the forum will discuss the efforts to build the common gas markets of the Union State and the Eurasian Economic Union. “This is vital for the sustainable development of national economies. This is especially relevant in the current foreign policy realities, in the light of instability in the global energy markets,” he said.

“The main priority of integration in the gas sector is to strengthen the energy sovereignty of our unions, to create new opportunities for their technological and information development, to reduce the impact of external factors on the real sector of the economies, and consequently on the quality and standard of living of our citizens,” the deputy prime minister noted.

“By joint efforts we have done a great job to create the necessary conditions for setting up the common market of the Union State. Taking into account the agreements at the level of heads of state, price terms for the supply of Russian natural gas for the period of 2023-2025 have been determined for Belarus. Gazprom is a reliable supplier of natural gas to Belarus. Taking into account further plans to deepen the Belarusian-Russian integration, the negotiation process continues both on the common gas market and on the price terms for natural gas to Belarus for subsequent periods. The main task is to equalize the economic conditions for the subjects of the two countries. These are really difficult issues, but each side has an understanding and an interest in finding mutually acceptable solutions. We are moving in this direction," Viktor Karankevich said.
