Harvesting of key crops nears completion in Belarus

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) – There is the timeline for farmers to complete the harvesting of potatoes, sugar beets, and corn, Belarusian Agriculture and Food Minister Yuri Gorlov told journalists following his report to the head of state, BelTA has learned.

“We are currently in the middle of the potato harvest and expect to finish it around 20 October. The sugar beet harvest is also ongoing, with about half of the crop already in. As always, we plan to complete it within the optimal period, by 7-10 November. Some 60% of corn for silage has already been harvested. We have 40% left to crop and will complete this work by 1 November,” Yuri Gorlov said.
According to him, the plan is to store 20.6 million tonnes of corn silage this year. “We are also making haylage. This typically involves leguminous grasses that need to be removed by 10-15 October. We fully meet the demand for silage and haylage required for our livestock industry. Overall, we plan to achieve a fodder production target of 33 centners of feed units per animal unit. This year, we will secure more fodder than last year,” the minister emphasized.

The baling of flax is also nearing completion. “We will finish this work in a matter of days, and after that collecting flax will take a few more days. The target was set at 180,000 tonnes of flax straw. We will process it at our flax mills, and supply the necessary amount of flax fiber to Orsha Linen Mill for processing,” the minister stated.
