Governor: Belarus, Russia's Murmansk Oblast enter new level of cooperation

MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) - Belarus and Murmansk Oblast of Russia are reaching a completely different level of cooperation, Murmansk Oblast Governor Andrei Chibis said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The most important decision, voiced by the Belarusian president, is that the export cargo will go through Murmansk. This is a very important, momentous event. The decision has been taken, and we are already working on it in detail with the cabinet of ministers and the relevant partners. There is one more project that already involves Belarusian contractors: we are building an ultramodern steel plant for the first time since the Soviet times, and Belarusian companies and builders are involved in it as part of contracts. Therefore, this solid foundation, a new level of interaction let us cooperate even more effectively,” said Andrei Chibis.

The project to use the port facilities of Murmansk Oblast for the transshipment of Belarusian cargo can be implemented by the end of the year, the governor said. “It is a question, first of all, of fertilizers and other export cargoes. Two sites have already been chosen and there are only details to work out, calculate financial solutions and timing issues. Corresponding documents are being prepared. The president of Belarus has made a decision in principle. I am very grateful to him for that. All the orders have been given, and the Prime Minister is very deeply involved in the matter. I am convinced that detailed decisions will be taken by the end of the year, and our partners, including Russian companies, are interested in active cooperation,” he said.

Andrei Chibis stated: Belarus and Murmansk Oblast are connected not just by partnership but primarily by friendly relations. “The most important thing is emotional human relations, because it is always pleasant and comfortable to be together with friends, comrades, real partners. I think that the mutual trade will increase considerably. I do not want to make predictions because it is not the numbers that matter. It is important that today we see very clear practical steps after June visit (my deputy was here and there was a big delegation from many industrial enterprises). Murmansk Oblast is one of the first Russian regions that concluded the agreement with Belarus in 1994. Today we are simply moving to a completely different level of cooperation. I think it is great” he added.
