GOMEL, 17 July (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Zhang Wenchuan met with Gomel Oblast Governor Ivan Krupko to discuss strengthening cooperation at both regional and national levels, BelTA has learned.
Ivan Krupko presented a video overview of Gomel Oblast’s social and economic potential to the Chinese delegation. He noted that trade between Gomel Oblast and China has doubled over the past five years, and mutually beneficial cooperation continues to grow across various sectors. “China is a strategic partner for Belarus as a whole and for Gomel Oblast. We see an increasing demand for Belarusian products from Chinese consumers, and we are ready to expand our supply volumes,” the governor emphasized, adding that the cooperation is based on mutual benefit. He cited a successful cooperation project in the dairy industry as an example. It is expected to launch in early autumn.
Ivan Krupko also remarked that Gomel Oblast and several Chinese regions have signed five agreements to establish twinning ties. In addition, 12 cities of Gomel Oblast twin with Chinese cities. “Our cooperation is gaining momentum. We are following approved roadmaps. We remain open to discussing and implementing new projects,” he assured. One such opportunity will be the Gomel Economic Forum, to which Chinese partners have been invited.
Although this was Ambassador Zhang Wenchuan’s first visit to Gomel Oblast, he has already appreciated the region’s hospitality and potential. “During our meeting, we agreed to further our friendship and cooperation across all areas: economy, education, culture, tourism, and more. We can identify and give new momentum for the development of the China-Belarus partnership,” he emphasized, assuring that the embassy will serve as a bridge for reinforcing existing ties and establishing new ones.
The two-day visit program included an overview of the region’s industrial and educational potential, as well as visits to the Gomel Oblast Museum of Military Glory, the Palace of the Rumyantsevs and the Paskeviches, and the memorial in the village of Krasny Bereg commemorating child victims of the Great Patriotic War. The delegation laid flowers at the memorial site.
