MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus Roman Golovchenko told the Belarus 1 TV channel what banking technologies can transcend to other industries.
Technological progress in the financial sector is very fast, Roman Golovchenko noted. “We sometimes do not notice it, we get used to new services very quickly. A short while ago we had to go to a bank office, stand in line, fill out a paper form in order to make a payment, pay a fee or a fine, or something else. Very little time has passed and we do all this from a computer, laptop, mobile phone, we transfer money to each other, we transfer money between our accounts through a mobile application,” he remarked.
In order to achieve such a level of digitalization, a lot of work had to be done, the head of the National Bank said. “I believe that our country, the Republic of Belarus, is on par with the most developed countries in this field. All the services that are available in other developed countries are also available in Belarus,” he said.
Speaking about technologies that can be used in other industries, Roman Golovchenko singled out two. The first of them is the biometric identification system. “When a client interacts with a bank, it is very important to make sure that this person is the one he/she claims to be. In fact, classic forms of identification, such as passwords, PIN codes, and so on, still have a certain vulnerability. But biometric identification systems don't. And now Belarusian banks use systems allowing a client who can even be outside the Republic of Belarus, to confirm their identity for the bank. I believe that this technology can be useful in other industries, such as communications. What is very important here is the software itself and its stability. I think that we can be called trailblazers in this field,” Roman Golovchenko said.
