First vice premier: SMEs account for almost 30% of Belarus’ GDP

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for almost 30% of Belarus’ GDP, Belarusian First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Snopkov said during the head of state’s meeting with representatives of private enterprises on 17 February, BelTA has learned.

According to Nikolai Snopkov, over the past 30 years the SME sector has grown from 8,000 to almost 110,000 enterprises. Some 40% of them are engaged in the production sector: industry, construction, transportation and agriculture. The number of employed people has increased from 230,000 to 1.4 million specialists.

“Their share in GDP is almost 30%. These are not just private enterprises of up to 250 staff. These are also enterprises with state ownership of up to 50%,” the first deputy prime minister said.

In 2024, exports of private enterprises amounted to almost $16 billion, excluding oil and potash. “The geography of exports does not lag behind the public sector - three quarters of the world's countries (146 out of 193 countries that are members of the UN),” Nikolai Snopkov said. “The share of revenues to the consolidated budget from these enterprises amounted to 33%. Up to 40% of district territorial revenues are formed thanks to deductions from small and medium-sized businesses.”
