Fast railway line between Minsk, airport expected to cost $150m

MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) – It will be possible to get from Minsk to the airport within 30-35 minutes on a fast train. The project to build the railway line is estimated to cost $150 million. The figures were revealed by Belarusian Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Avramenko as he addressed members of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament on 3 December, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “As for the construction of a railway line to the Minsk National Airport, we've started preparing the feasibility study. The electric train is expected to connect the railway terminal in the city with the Minsk National Airport. The time in transit is expected to be 30-35 minutes.”

The volume of investments the project requires is tentatively estimated at about $150 million. “A more precise figure will be available in March 2020 once the feasibility study is ready,” he said.

Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Rumas met with First Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Jurgen Rigterink on 3 December. Sergei Rumas invited the EBRD to participate in the project. The Belarusian government had previously extended a similar invitation to the World Bank.

Aleksei Avramenko noted that possible participation of various banks in the project was under consideration. The choice of the bank will depend on the terms the specific bank is willing to offer. The share of investments the bank is ready to finance will be discussed with every bank as well.
